Boundaries and Rooms in Your Garden

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By Robin De Groot Creating structural elements in your garden will transform it from the ordinary, to the extraordinary. A well-planned framework of supports and dividers will create visual interest throughout the year, as well as allow your plants greater depth and perspective by incorporating the walls, fences, arbors, trellis and forms, into their growth pattern. Boundaries and divisions also create the stage setting for each area in your garden, while keeping the rest of the world (and its problems) out. The feeling of going through a rose covered arbor with a boxwood hedge, into a wide expanse of lawn with a central feature, is inspiring. The sight of a stonewall with climbers in bloom, cascading over its surface with the light dappling through its leaves, allowing just a glimpse of the plantings behind it, overwhelms the viewer with joy. Everyone can easily create this feeling and look in their garden, by incorporating structure and by understanding the method of dividing your property. Firstly, you need to analyze your gardens: Foreground The area closest to your home and the most visible. This is often your entertaining feature and utility area. Very small gardens usually have only a foreground, and thus require considerable planning. Midground This is the middle area of your property where you can show off with large perennial beds and special features. This is also the best area for lawn, larger ponds and garden structures. Background This is the furthest area from your home and is generally best suited for larger trees, greenhouses, vegetable gardens, wild life cultivation (birding), composting and larger perimeter fencing and hedges. The garden divisions you would use in the first zones (foreground and midground) should be lower in height and semi transparent in nature (picket fences, wattle, low hedges, stone walls, trellis and varying ground levels). In both very small gardens and large gardens, view your outer most perimeters as an opportunity to create a sense of enclosure and privacy for your garden. External boundaries create privacy, shield you from noise and wind and allow you to create your own personal theme. Internal boundaries are used to inspire and entice both yourself and your guests to lose oneself in the garden. These semi transparent or small-scale internal divisions are to create a psychological break between zones and usages. Methods of Division Lattice Indispensable! This is the only word that can encapsulate its many benefits and uses in your garden. From the French treillage, you can make it yourself, buy it off the shelf, or have it customized. Fencing created with lattice, gives an open, seductive quality to it, while allowing the passage of air and light, with a degree of privacy. Lattice can be mounted on your external boundaries to create both visual depth and foliage support. Anything that cannot be moved from your garden (garage, shed, and block wall) can be easily covered with lattice. In a formal setting, lattice (treillage) can be arched with tapering lines to give a classical perspective, while providing winter interest. In small gardens, lattice provides a horizontal growing space for foliage and hanging containers. Natural Stone Walls Walls built of flagstone, slate or rubble, provide a sense of permanence and comfort. Natural stone internal boundaries create a visual strength and power to your design while being both functional and ornamental. You can construct internal walls yourself, however, anything over 36 will require professional advice. Plant moss in the cracks and train your plants to cascade over them to create a sense of antiquity. Fencing The spectrum of choices includes: country style picket fences; woven twig mesh fences; lattice fencing; panel fences; split rails and imposing palisades. Whatever your choice, remember to first examine your space and determine which style will best suit your design, internally and externally. For example, if you are creating a Japanese garden, then your external walls will be tall, of natural materials and will provide complete privacy from the outside world. Internal divisions may be created to direct your eye on featured elements, while also providing a sense of intimacy to secluded areas in your garden. When choosing the materials for your fencing, think about their size, alignment, pattern, colour, configuration and style. Cast Iron Popular since the early 19th century, this style is best suited for formal gardens, particularly for their external boundaries. Iron can be left in its natural state, or can be painted. Arbors This type of garden divider is essentially an area for seating, with a canopy structure above. Arbors, in all their forms (pergola, arch, etc.), create a sense of romance and mystery. An arbor will create an internal division in your garden, while also providing support for climbing plants, focusing your view and directing traffic flow. The contrast of the shaded retreat within and the sunlit garden surrounding it, gives a greater sense of depth to your design. These structures (arbors, pergolas, archways, etc.) frame the garden view beyond them, while providing an enjoyable means of emerging from your foreground, to your mid ground. Hedges A natural method of creating boundaries, while providing yearlong visual interest. Hedges, like fences, will filter the wind, afford privacy and depending upon your plant selection, bloom throughout the summer. In a formal garden, hedges are usually clipped into geometric forms; thus, you need to select a plant with a dense growth pattern. Boxwood (Boxus Sempervirens) is perfect for parterre gardens and topiary forms. Yew, white cedar, privet and juniper are also all well suited for training and heavy clipping, allowing you to create any form your design requires. In an informal garden, a softer, unclipped hedge is best suited. While they will take more space, you can achieve a cascade of blossoms with this design. Dwarf lilac, Potentila, Roses and Bride Wreath (Spirea X Vanhouttei) are just a few examples. Prune your informal hedge only when your plants are becoming too large. By incorporating some or all of these elements within your garden you will transform it from merely having summer interest, into a garden that is equally beautiful throughout every season of the year. How To Find Your Best Niche

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

By David Ferrers I know youre going to hate me for saying this but the first thing you should do is think about it. Its probably sitting right under your nose. Every time Ive been looking for the best niche from which to win new business the answer has always been obvious when it eventually emerged. So obvious that I can never believe it took me so long to figure it out. My thinking now follows a process. Ive done it a few times, so I thought Id share my procedure with you. Nowadays I start my hard thinking by doing a little navel gazing. I look back at all the things Ive done in my life and ask myself what I was any good at. This is how I came to write a special Marketing Program for coaches. Id been staring out of the window, looking up the hill to the chestnut wood where the bluebells grow and thinking about my own coaching practice. It suddenly dawned on me that I had a client list that many would kill for. Then I asked myself: how come Ive got all these good clients when a lot of coaches find it difficult to win enough clients? The answer has to be that I am good at marketing my services. O.K. so why not produce a Marketing Program to help other coaches win new business? Seems obvious doesnt it? The key is to look at your own successes. This is something that a lot of people find hard. I suspect thats because theyre too modest. They tend to under-estimate their own achievements. Try this test, ask anyone you know: when did you last give yourself a pat on the back? The answer from most people will be something like, I never do that. What a shame! Dont make the same mistake that all your friends make. Ask yourself: what have I done that I ought to feel proud about? Then youll be hot on the trail of a really profitable niche. Marketing Expert David Ferrers works with professional business people like Accountants, Consultants, Trainers, Coaches and Service Providers. Hell show you the best ways to win new business. Carb Cycling for Fat Loss

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

By Randall E. Rhodes Carb cycling for fat loss is one way in which some people will try to lose weight. While everyone has a different opinion about what works, what doesnt work is a diet where carbohydrates are cut out entirely. A healthy eating plan should include fats, carbohydrates, and protein. To follow a diet without them would be akin to endangering your health. Carbohydrates contain many nutrients. They can be found in most foods that we eat. They are made of simple and complex sugars that are metabolized by the body for energy, or stored as fat when no more is needed. Examples of simple carbohydrates include: fruits and dairy products such as milk and cheese. Complex carbohydrates are heavier foods such as: pastas, breads, potatoes, rice, and cereals. Eating less of the complex and more of the simple carbohydrates types may be a good way to lose weight. Determining what foods will help burn fat is the key. Diets that advocate no carbohydrates force the body to obtain all of its energy from protein and fats. When protein from food is no longer available to meet the bodys energy needs, the body begins siphoning it from the muscle tissue of the body. In essence, the body begins eating itself for fuel. No one wants that. The body needs glucose to function. Interestingly enough, the glucose needed by the brain must come from carbohydrates and not protein sources. Carbohydrates have been classified by their glycemic index (GI) number. This method of rating carbohydrates helps people make wiser choices about what they include in their diets. Foods with high GIs (greater than fifty) cause the body to store fat. Foods with a low GI number (less than fifty); cause the body to burn fat. Clearly, muscle burning fat burning food is the preferred method by which one can achieve fat loss. One of the muscle burning fat loss truths is that a diet that features low GI carbohydrates, allows for the insulin level in the body to be maintained at a steady level. These carbohydrates are processed at a slower rate by the body. The other hormone glucagon, can work to burn the sugars for energy in the cells. You dont feel hungry all the time when the insulin hormone level in the body has no major fluctuations. Moreover, when you expend energy during physical activity, the body starts releasing fat stores to use for energy metabolism. Therefore, a carb cycling for fat loss provides the body with energy without going into crisis mode. In order to achieve greater fat loss, eat the right carbohydrates. Choose fresh vegetables and fruits. Whole grain or seven grain breads and pastas are preferred to those made with white flour. Beans and nuts are good for a low carbohydrate diet. If you must have potatoes, try sweet potatoes. The GI number is lower and they are great with non-fat spray butter. Dont try to cut out all of your carbohydrates. Simply reduce them to lose weight by knowing what muscle building fat burning food is best for you. Who else wants to melt fat away and look better with more energy? Learn a revolutionary way to lose 9 Lbs every 11 days without starving - in fact, you eat more! If you found these carb cycling for fat loss tips helpful, you deserve to be slimmer in 11 days! Tips For Growing The Flowering Dogwood Tree

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

By Lee Dobbins When it comes to picking the trees to contribute to the landscape, it is great to be able to plant flowering trees to add color at eye level and one popular choice is the flowering dogwood tree. Dogwood trees, or the European Cornels as others would designate it, create a perfect impact to the environment. They are good choice for your landscape as their brilliant blossoms tend to last long. They are especially wonderful sight during autumn. On the average, a dogwood tree can grow from 20 to 25 feet in height. The spread of the dogwood can also reach as wide as 15 to 20 feet. The dogwood is part of the Cornaceae family, under the Cornus genus. It is known as the provincial flower of British Columbia in Canada and the state flower of Virginia, USA. The flowering dogwood trees generally have glossy green color. It has distinct opposite leaves, but there can be found some branches with the alternate order. All species of the dogwood bear fruits that have one or two seeds in it. On the other hand, the flowers of the dogwood have four parts. They usually come in clusters of yellow or white. They are also surrounded by greenish bracts that can be mistaken as petals. There is a popular story for the flowering dogwood tree. It was said to be the wood used to build the cross for the crucifixion of Christ due to its towering characteristic and hardwood. The tree then won the favour of God that it was turned into a smaller tree with gnarled and twisted trunks so that it will not be used again for that dire purpose. It was also given white flowers resembling the cross. The center area of the flower is reddish and is regarded as a symbol for the blood of Jesus. Dogwood trees are often used as ornaments. Nowadays, dogwoods can be found along water ways where they best give a natural effect to the landscape. The most favorite choice for this purpose are the species with bright yellow or red stems. The term dogwood is actually a variation of the word dagwood. This latter term is actually used to describe the slender stems that are characteristic of hard wood used for making daggers or skewers. This type of wood is also considered very useful in making tools, shuttles and other pieces that need strong wood. Dogwoods also bear fruits in bright and cherry red colors. These are very much loved by the birds. Most of the fruits in the genus where dogwood belongs are edible, though they are not found very favorable because it does not contain much flavor. Some berries can only be feasted on by birds as they are toxic to humans. Cultivating Flowering Dogwood Trees There are certain considerations to ensure that you grow well a healthy and blooming dogwood tree in your yard. Here are some points to take note of. 1. Characteristic of the Soil The dogwood can very well adapt to the different soil types that can provide it with basic nutrients. They can thrive in alkaline, acidic, loamy, sandy, clay or drought tolerant soils. Problems may arise if the dogwood is not given the proper conditions needed. At the least, it is preferable to provide soils that are rich in nutrients and well-drained after sufficient water supply. 2. Enemy Pests The Dogwood Borer is the main enemy of this flowering tree. This is most common in areas of the United States and Canada. They can cause damage by thriving in the bark of the trees to feast on its tissues. This pest will cause the tree to grow slowly or at the worst, kill it. Make sure this pests are prevented properly. 3. Preventing Diseases The flowering dogwood is also susceptible to the disease brought by dogwood anthracnose. The fungus Discula destructiva causes the devastation of the flowers before they can bloom. There are many things in nature that we can enjoy. One of its clear proofs is the flowering dogwood tree. So make sure you get to enjoy it in your own garden. Bring nature closer to home. Essential Tips For Cheap Honeymoons

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

By Peter Morgan The time is right for you to get married, but between the wedding, the reception, and the bridal party gifts, you’re not sure how you’re going to afford the honeymoon. The post-wedding celebration can often be quite expensive, but you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great time. The cheap honeymoons can be just as memorable and enjoyable as an expensive one. How can you have wonderful cheap honeymoons? Well, the easiest way to save money on this trip is to stay somewhere close to home. If you do this, you can save money on: * Airfare * Shuttle to and from the airport * Parking fees if you park at the lot * Passport application fees Staying close to home on cheap honeymoons also means that you’ll be much more likely to find a great deal. You have a better chance of knowing what prices are reasonable in your area and what so-called deals are little more than marketing. Another inexpensive honeymoons idea is to go on a road trip instead of flying. Travel in the off-season for the cheap honeymoons . If you are getting married in February, don’t honeymoon in Hawaii. Plan for a cozy week in a snug bed and breakfast rather than a beach trip to Hawaii. However, if you are getting married in September, check the rates for Hawaii. That’s actually the off-season there, and you might find a good deal. Keep your eyes open for spectacular package deals. They do still exist and can be a great way to the cheap honeymoons . Sometimes you can save big on a cruise or with an all-inclusive package. Get an interior cabin for your cruise. They cost a lot less, and have many of the same amenities.
