Teaching Responsibility Through Cooking

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Debbie Madson How can cooking with your kids teach them responsibility? Several ways stick out including teaching them to work together to finish a project or finishing by themselves. Cooking is something you can’t leave half done especially not if you want to eat the finished product. Kids will learn that they can work together as a team either with a parent, sibling or friend. If they are old enough to cook themselves they learn to take responsibility and not give up until the recipe is complete. A parent or guardian must teach kids proper kitchen safety and food preparation and then they are held responsible for abiding the rules. One rule for young chefs is they must have an adult supervise while they are working in the kitchen. For older chefs they will be responsible for turning off the oven when they are done, proper knife safety, or not using certain items in the kitchen. Don’t forget the importance of teaching your kids who love to cook that cleaning up after themselves is a responsibility that comes with cooking. Making sure items are put away, dishes are cleaned up or towels put in the laundry are all important points to remember. Get your kids involved with meals by assigning tasks to help with food preparation or table setting. Kids of any age can be given tasks or responsibilities to help the family. Younger kids can help shred lettuce for a salad while older kids can cut vegetables to go in the salad. Teenagers can be put in charge of a main dish or side dish to go with the meal. Everyone in the family can have a responsibility that helps get dinner done quicker. One of the most important points I can mention is teaching your kids to be responsible for taking care of their bodies and eating healthy. You can teach kids about good nutrition with cooking projects and help them realize the importance of a varied diet. Of course, brownies taste great but fruits and vegetables prepared in various different ways is what their bodies need. (an occasional brownie is certainly not bad in my opinion.) Teaching responsibility in kids is important for a happy well balanced adult and if you add cooking to the mix they are sure to have fun while learning at the same time. Relationships: Love And Jealousy

Friday, April 25th, 2008

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. There are individuals who use their feelings of jealousy to rate how much they love their partner or how much they are loved by their partner. They believe, for instance, that if Im feeling jealous that others are paying too much attention to my partner then thats a sign of how much I love him/her. Alternately they may believe that if I make my partner jealous through my friendships with others that its a sign of how much my partner loves me. In the former case the feelings of jealousy simply reflect deep feelings of insecurity that have nothing to do with love. If your partner is being dishonest and this is obvious to you a more appropriate reaction might be to acknowledge this as a form of abuse and that this relationship is not worth entertaining further. In which case you should not feel jealous, rather relieved that you recognized it before you became further wounded. In the latter case if you are intentionally trying to make you partner jealous to see how much he/she loves you then this too is coming from a place of deep insecurity, yours! In this case it is you who is being abusive and if this is your way of showing your love who do you expect would love you back for it, no one! On the other hand if your partner is the jealous type and your friendships are not intended to make him/her jealous then he/she has the problem around insecurity and you the problem of deciding how much further to proceed in this relationship. If you too are insecure you may decide to put up with such a partner, If not, then you may decide otherwise, but then you already understood this. So you see love and jealousy are not extensions of each other. To get to a true place of love all your feelings of jealousy and therefore insecurity must be addressed for what they are; a sign that you are not yet ready for a mature relationship! Marketing Basics Aren’t a Bad Thing

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Dan Nichols When Advertising, it’s not always better to be the lone wolf. Before using a certain medium to advertise, consider those that went before you. If you are thinking of advertising in a newspaper for example, consider how many of your competitors are in the same paper. If you don’t see any competitors at all, there may be a good reason for it. Don’t think for one moment that your the first guy to think of using this particular medium to advertise. It is remotely possible you are but chances are slim you’d be the first person to pioneer this advertising path. I think of this psychology much like the feeling one gets when passing a slot machine. Hmmm… no one else is playing this one, I think I’ll give it a try, man oh man, it is calling my name. Even in the world of gambling, the smart players go where the machines are known to pay off more often. A perfect example is motorcycle dealers. You will find that despite the competition, they tend to show up in the local "everything used for sale" paper. In Michigan, it’s called the “Trade n Times”. This paper comes out every couple of weeks and lists everything from sewing machines to homes for sale including used motorcycles. Why do the dealers choose this paper? Because they know that most of their client base sell their used bikes here first while they begin to look for a new one. And the reality is, they wouldn’t keep paying the money to be in this paper if it didn’t earn them a return on their investment. One really exceptional strategy I use when looking to advertise in a new market is to actually call people advertising in it to see if it is working. Of course I look for someone in a non-competitive business and have discovered they are generally willing to help with an honest assessment. Often times this conversation puts us on the same level "from one entrepreneur to another" and opens up a networking opportunity for me as well. This brings up a few other thoughts including my favorite - parasite marketing. Read about that on my website. The moral of the story is, the lone wolf may be alone because he’s too ignorant to find a pack or he’s blind. All too often inexperienced marketers will try a bunch of different avenues and like rolling dice, hope to get lucky. Your safest if you go with the flock in the beginning, advertise where the competition advertises and then as you begin to make some money try the waters elsewhere. 8 Quick Ways to Reduce Local Phone Service Charges

Monday, April 21st, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Karen_Thatcher]Karen Thatcher Despite all the new and emerging business communications technologies of the 21st century (VoIP, Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Bluetooth, cell phones, blackberries, etc.) the majority of companies in business today still write a check each and every month to a local exchange carrier for a 125 yr. old technology - local phone service - (sometimes referred to as POTS, or “plain old telephone service”). Although it may be the same boring set of copper wires that connects to a standard telephone and rings when calls come in, the local phone service portion of your company’s telecommunications bills is the perfect place to begin your telecom cost reduction efforts. Here are 8 quick ways to begin cutting your local phone service bills. Check them off one by one when completed and you could reduce your local phone service bills by up to 10% or more. 1) Determine the proper local service plan for your needs - then regrade if necessary. Many Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) offer three basic types of local service plans. Flat-Rate Service allows for unlimited calling within a local area at no additional charge. With Measured Rate Service, charges are applied to local calls according to time and/or distance and/or time of day. Message Rate Service which applies charges to each local call without regard to duration or distance. Analyze your company needs through observational and personal surveys, then determine the most cost-effective local service plan. You will be amazed at the savings by simply implementing the appropriate plan for your company’s calling patterns. NOTE: When regrading from a flat-rate service plan to a measured or message rate plan, be sure that you are aware of the extent to which employees are making personal calls. Also, consider any lines that may be connected to frequently used services such as apartment door answering systems. 2) Remove unnecessary or unused lines. Historically telephone companies have recommended and provided quantities of access lines sufficient to provide a P.01 grade of service. This means that no more than 1% of all callers will receive a busy signal during the busiest hour of the day. P.01 is appropriate for some situations, but it does result in many customers having many more lines than are necessary. Take inventory of all the lines that are being billed, then track them down and determine their level of importance during day to day business activities. Eliminate lines with phone numbers that cannot be identified, lines that ring with no answer, and/or measured or message rate lines that show no usage. For more advanced telephone traffic calculations, use , our online telephone traffic analysis program. 3) Remove unnecessary or unused line features and services. More often than not, most companies have lines that contain features and/or services that are either not needed or are rarely used. The problem arises when features are added to serve a specific purpose or employee, then not removed when things change. Over time, many features may be included on lines and users have no idea they are even available. Your previously conducted circuit inventory will help you determine the specific features needed for each line. Wire maintenance charges should always be eliminated. These charges can be as high as $6.00 per month for each line! 4) Block expensive pay-per-use features. Directory assistance call completion, repeat dial and call return are nice and convenient for employees - but they will cost your company over time. These features can and should be blocked through your carrier immediately. If any of these features are needed, contact your LEC and ask if a monthly fee be paid for unlimited usage. 5) Review the summary section of your bills every month. Nothing can take the place of a well-designed and systematic telecom audit of your entire telecom department. However, a quick monthly scan of the summary section of your local telephone bills will sometimes turn up “golden nuggets” of savings. Common problems include: more than one long distance carrier included (slamming), bogus Internet charges (cramming) from companies other than your ISP, and directory listings that are not listed. These charges can run as high as $29.95. To maximize savings, review each bill every month. Bogus charges will continue month after month until they are removed. And don’t be surprised if they magically appear again in 2-3 months time after they are removed from a bill. 6) Consider upgrading to a T1 if you have more than 20 lines. For smaller businesses, installing a T1 line into your PBX system can reduce your local telephone charges. A T1 can be cost-effective because it combines many outgoing lines into a single digital line that runs from your office to the LEC central office. The T1 can replace up to 24 POTS lines in your PBX. No one will notice a difference except maybe the person who pays the bills. In addition, a T1 can carry data as well. 7) Gather customer service records (CSRs) from your LEC for more detailed local service analysis. A great deal of information can be found on CSRs that are not contained on your monthly billing statement. They are an invaluable resource when attempting to identify unneeded services and unused lines. CSRs reveal the quantity and types of lines, their PICs, service elements, hunting arrangements, wire maintenance, circuit termination locations, directory listings, and a host of other esoteric information. Obtaining your CSRs from the LEC can be a painful and time-consuming process, but the effort is worth it in savings and credits that are eventually rendered. Some LECs will charge a fee issuing CSRs, but with some persistence, you may be able to get this fee waived. 8) Consider engaging a telecom consultant for telecom auditing, bill management or telemanagement services. Time is money. If your staff is not prepared to consistently implement the above tasks, consider engaging a professional telecom consulting firm to handle them for you. Ideally, a telecom audit done first will turn up many areas for potential cost-savings. Then a monthly bill management program will keep bills clean and free from those pesky recurring errors. At TelCon Associates, we have structured our consulting services for maximum savings to the client with no risk. We place our emphasis on details, timeliness and a high level personal service for our clients. So get to work on reducing those local phone bills. You will be glad you did. The Best in Skin Care for 2006

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By David Maillie The skin, as we are all taught in high school, is the largest and the most visible tissue in the human body. Of course it is. It covers us entirely from head to toe. It is our protective casing that allows us to move freely and gives us feedback on external textures, climate and other things associated with the sense of touch. The pores in our skin also helps us to release internal wastes through perspiration. These, among other benefits and special characteristics, make our skin one of the most important parts of our body and therefore one of the first things to take care of. We want our skin to be supple and smooth, yet still strong and healthy. There have been countless skin care products and treatments developed over the years that have helped a lot of people and solved many skin problems. However, its one thing to cure skin damage and its another to protect it. When you were born, your skin was nothing short of perfect. Therefore, the first logical thing to do is to protect your skin from any kind of damage or unwanted reaction from external factors. Nonetheless, there are numerous things that can damage your skin even without you knowing it. Some of these would be climate or weather, unknown allergies from food or drink, and the most dreaded skin damager of all age. Though its possible to stay away from harsh climates and food you are allergic to, it is sad to note that age is something that we simply cannot avoid. Everything solid in this world wears out with age. However, this doesnt mean we cant do anything about it. There are various products and treatments available for making your skin look younger and less wrinkled, like TCA peels and other various skin peels. Nevertheless, the important thing is to keep your skin as healthy as possible all the time while youre young, in order to effectively help in slowing down the ageing process. The more careless you are with your skin, the faster itll develop wrinkles and look older. Leading dermatologist Greta Winslow of Wade Skin Clinic advises .always remember that healthy skin is the result of a healthy lifestyle. And by healthy lifestyle, we mean a balanced diet, lots of water (less sodas and carbonated drinks), sufficient vitamins, regular exercise, enough sleep, no smoking, less alcohol consumption, good exfoliation with skin peels like TCA peels, and effective management of daily stress. Its also good to suggest that the use of tanning beds and some topical skin treatments or medication that are said to provide instant results may be more harmful than helpful. Its always good to consult with a skin doctor for things you arent sure of In addition to these lifestyle tips, skin experts say that the best way to care for your skin is to cleanse it as often as possible, or at least on a daily basis. They note, however, that the choice of skin cleanser is critical in having healthy skin. Choose the one thats mild and with less chemicals. Make up must be totally removed before cleansing and always use only lukewarm water. Wonders of Angelica (Rheumatism, Colds, Kidney Disorders) - from a South African Perspective

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Andrew Smit Angelica Other Names: Archangelica officinalis, Garden Angelica, Archangel, Masterwort. Parts Used: The leaves, seed, and roots. Culinary Uses: This robust and sweet-tasting plant is best known for its use in decoration of cakes and puddings. The stem is candied and used as a confection. Angelica lessens the need for sweetener when making pies or sauces. Root: Angelica can also be cooked and eaten as a fresh herb, used for seasoning fish, or made into syrup for pudding and ice cream toppings. Rhubarb, angelica and honey combine to make a tasty sauce. The stems (from the fresh plant) may be cut and prepared like asparagus. The leaves, fresh or dried, may be added to soups and stews. Use about a half tablespoon of the leaves to a quantity that will serve four, adding it in the last minutes of cooking. The leaves are also made into a popular tea, tasting much like China tea. Other uses: Herbalists use it to aid in the elimination of toxins, the recovery from rheumatism and colds, urinary complaints, and colic. Also used as a stimulating diaphoretic and expectorant for colds, coughs, and pleurisy. It is also good added to remedies for rheumatism and kidney disorders. An infusion of 1 ounce dried chopped root in 1 pint boiling water for 1/2 hour in a covered container. Drink 2 tablespoons of the liquid, flavoured with honey if you wish, 3 or 4 times daily to relieve flatulence. Another infusion: Infuse 1 teaspoon seed in 1 cup boiling water; cover. Allow to stand until cool; strain and drink 1 to 2 cups cold a day, again flavoured with honey if desired. (It should be noted that angelica has a tendency to increase the sugar in the urine, so those with a tendency to diabetes should avoid it.) Tuck a couple fingers full of ground angelica between lip and gum or in the cheek, like snuff. Swallow the juice. It is reputed to be an excellent stomach tonic and remedy for the nervousness that comes from too much smoking. http://www.turtleherbestate.co.za where you will find Global solutions and ideas.Turtle Herb Estate Holdings consists of 3 forward thinking entrepreneurs with expertise in marketing & DTP advertising, farming culinary and medicinal herbs, web design and online marketing, horse breeding (sport horses),animal health products, import and export, engineering and industrial design (water solutions), arts and crafts. Weight Loss Diets - Still On The Yo-Yo?

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

By Tom Jacobson Have you found yourself a few pounds up? Does your weight loss routine seem to go 2 pounds up- 1 pound back? The first step in any successful weight loss plan, is how to get the motivation. We all know the diets, read the newest and latest best sellers. However, we keep up with the same old habits. We join clubs on the 1st of Jan. only to disappear by Feb. 1st. What is your motivation for loosing weight? If you haven’t found it, you probably won’t succeed. How about being healthier and being around to see your kids graduate. How about just looking better in clothes? For me my motivation came when I decided to see how the camera saw me. I had my wife take pictures from all angles in my bathing suit. Next, I posted these pictures on my mirrors, refrigerator and even in my truck. After a week went by, I became disgusted by the pictures. I stopped in to a health club and had them measure my body fat. They told me politely that I was 27 percent lard. That was the breaker! After that, I began an exercise program that included diet, drinking more water, weight training, aerobics, monthly body composition measurements, keeping a log, and getting plenty of sleep. The only real diet that makes sense is to get a steady diet of exercise. Start slow and progress forward. Visit a gym, see a trainer. Do whatever it takes to get motivated. Get intense if the Doctor says it is Ok. Watch the Biggest Loser on TV for motivation. Not everybody wins the trophy but most go home healthier and a winner. Tom Jacobson is a real estate agent in Washington who has recently lost 35 pounds and started a successful exercise and diet program. Anybody who is carrying a few extra pounds can get motivation from his tips. Awake And Paralyzed During Surgery

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Louis_Tinnin] Louis Tinnin The Trauma of Awakening Awareness under anesthesia ranks second only to death as a dreaded complication of surgery. It is reported to affect 40,00-140,000 patients per year in the US but there is reason to believe that many more have awakened during surgery. Because modern anesthesia consists of three agents a light dose of painkiller, a paralyzing drug, and an amnesic agent that blocks memory of the experience most patients do not remember awakening and so do not report it to their doctors. The paralyzing drug prevents any struggle or gesture as sign of distress so the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, and nurse cannot see that the patient is awake. Some experimental studies estimate the rate of awareness may be as high as 44%. Not remembering does not diminish the pain, fear, and utter helplessness of awakening under the knife and being unable to let anyone know. Nor does it diminish the traumatic effect of that experience. Survivors who finally recall the awakening usually describe an experience in which their center of awareness coalesces outside their helpless body and they watch the scene from above. Their frozen state and accompanying depersonalization seems to go on and on without a clear point of resolution. The return to the body may happen in the recovery room or even later in the hospital room and, rarely, only after days, weeks, or years. Posttraumatic Consequences The experience of awakening in a panic during surgery and finding oneself unable to move or cry out creates a dramatic crescendo of survival instincts. The drug-induced paralysis thwarts any impulse to escape and deepens the instinctual freeze response. Awareness during surgery carries the exact conditions known to induce post-traumatic symptoms. The horrors of the experience become embedded in the nonverbal mind with a potential to intrude into consciousness whenever triggered. The suffering individual will not relate the emerging panic to unremembered and wordless experiences during a past surgical operation. Over half of the patients that remember coming light under anesthesia develop the full syndrome of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Survivors with or without memory often become phobic about surgery and their avoidance of triggers may generalize to a fear of hospitals or doctors or of white coats. They may suffer attacks of frozen panic or depersonalization, sometimes with clouded states of altered consciousness. They may repeatedly hear the voices of operating room staff. Their conditions are often misdiagnosed as panic disorder, major depression, schizophrenia, or epilepsy. Treatment of Surgical PTSD Once the true cause is suspected the condition can be readily treated and cured with trauma therapy. Successful treatment does require processing of the entire traumatic experience so the therapy must be able to access that seemingly forgotten memory. The memory is there even though conscious verbal probes fail to reach it. It was not verbally coded when the person was under the dual effect of the anesthetics and the instinctual trauma response. Even though it was stored in fragments of nonverbal perception it can be processed into a narrative form that will be available to conscious thought. Hypnosis is very effective in providing access to the traumatic memory fragments. Other approaches that use nonverbal communication can also be effective. These are the creative arts therapies such as art therapy, movement therapy, music therapy and psychodrama. In most applications the person constructs a verbal narrative of the trauma and comes to own it as a finished historical event. Louis W. Titanium Mens Wedding Rings - The Contemporary Look for the Modern Man

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Peter Crump The wearing of a man wedding ring is a relatively modern phenomenon. So is the use of Titanium in Titanium mens rings. One of the newest and classiest of the modern jewelry materials, Titanium is setting a standard in the looks of contemporary mens wedding bands. Despite this, mens titanium rings are reasonably hard to find in your local jewelry store. Unfortunately titanium hasnt quite made it into the consciousness of your local jewelry merchant. So if you want to find the ultimate in contemporary male jewelry, including mens titanium rings, you have to look further affield. Enter the internet. There is a world of choice on the net for the modern couple searching for the ideal contemporary design mens titanium wedding band. But first, what is titanium? Titanium is a naturally occurring element, not an alloy. In other words it isnt just a mixture of two or more different metals to produce a third one, as alloys are. That is not to say that Titanium cannot be alloyed with other metals, just that Titanium itself is not an alloy. It is in fact often alloyed with other metals for jewelry making to make it harder, although all Titanium including pure Titanium makes a fine jewelry material. For the more chemically minded amongst us, Titanium is listed in the periodic table as a natural element, atomic number 22. It was named in 1795 after the god Titan. Titanium can even be found in space rocks. The Apollo 17 mission brought back rocks with up to 12% Titanium in them. Because of its natural properties Titanium has been primarily used in the aerospace industry, and only more recently applied to jewelry making. But why is Titanium such a great material for making mens wedding bands? A number of reasons. Firstly it is very hard, much harder than traditional ring materials such as gold and silver. It is extremely lightweight, corrosion resistant and very strong. It is so strong in fact that rings are fashioned out of a solid block of metal, so make sure that you get your size right as resizing is usually not an option. It is hypoallergenic, meaning that it cannot produce skin reactions or allergies as can be found with some other ring materials, though rare. But the real reason is that it looks great! Titanium can be shaped into a wide variety of styles. It can also be colored into a stunning range of colors which can be mixed and matched. For this reason the range of choices in mens Titanium wedding bands is much greater than for a more traditional material such as gold for example. Although gold can be altered to offer a small range of different colours, it is basically gold colored. Titanium offers a much wider range of choices in color. Titanium also offers a choice of finish, most commonly satin, matt or polished. Black Titanium mens wedding rings are amongst the most eye catching of all the Titanium rings. Black Titanium rings are usually a mix of black Titanium coupled with another color as an all black ring can be overpowering. But a contemporary style mens black Titanium ring is almost the ultimate in chic for the man who wants to make a statement. Mens Titanium rings can be coupled with a wide range of precious gemstones, including diamonds, to add effect. And as Titanium is so strong it is also possible to buy tension set titanium rings. What are these? Well the strength of the material is used to suspend a gemstone, say a diamond, between the two ends of the ring so that the gemstone is almost hanging in space in the ring. A totally modern look. The strength of the Titanium keeps it there. And for the more creatively minded amongst us it is possible to design your own mens Titanium ring. There are online jewellers who offer the option of making up a design for your Titanium ring that is unique only to you. You decide exactly what style, color or mix of colors you want. Want to add a gemstone? Or more than one? Where do you want to put it in the ring? Its all up to you. There is no doubt that the older traditional materials used for making rings make beautiful rings. Gold or silver rings are still high on the list of choices for many men, and modern ring designs in these materials are also impressive. But the modern man who has decided to wear his marital status on his finger shouldnt buy a ring before he looks at the range of Titanium mens wedding rings.
